Black Lace -- my latest art project

I have finally tackled the last of the bedrooms stylistically. This time it was simply gluing lace on some furniture rather than big remodeling overhaul. The room will be changing much more shortly, since [info]syncretin will be moving his stuff here now that he's downgrading his other home in San Francisco from an apartment to a single bedroom. I only photographed the credenza, since its the coolest, but I also added lace to the edges of the bookcase :)

I tried moving the bed this way and that all over the room, but ultimately I think I prefer the original configuration with the bed frame.

I thought it looked better with it off, but then tried putting it back on, and found that the structure was a big improvement.

I tend to get crazy obsessive and agitated with stuff like this, hence why I don't take on many art projects when not in altered mental states. I make stuff that looks cool, but I have a hard time seeing it as cool, because all I see is things that could use improvement. It drives Patri nuts. But hopefully I've worn myself out with all the moving around and will be satisfied now. Must sleep, and ready to do so.

There are some things that I work on that I'm eventually satisfied with. Take for example http://alpinebutterfly.org/pswedding/. Simple, but it took me about 40hrs of being perfectionistic fussing to get it just how I wanted. I think I spent about 20hrs each on the butterflies. And probably 40 on the lion. But I don't actually track the hours, so who knows.

So the room is art to me. So is child raising. Boy does that one stress me out ;)

Okay, bed :P

Our Living Room

cheery up
I was going to wait until I was "all finished" but have decided that I was being silly. Why live life for the destination when I can live more fully into the moment and make this my destination. I am changing.

This painting project came out of two main motivations. One, is to not take myself so seriously. How can I take myself overly seriously when I have giant happy faces painted on my living room wall!?!! ;)

And yet, it is a taking myself seriously. I LOVE that I, and my husband, are the types of people who would paint giant happy faces on our living room wall.

This desire was born out of some big emotional ups and downs. Mostly all in my head, only shared with a few friends. But basically, for about a month or two I've been going through some really intense feelings. I've been so sure of how I felt one day, that the next would feel like a slap in the face to a completely different reality. (I think that sounds a bit crazy, I don't think it is literally, although I'm not completely certain of course)

Anyway, going from one extreme intense all consuming state one day, to "no big deal" the next, and back again, many times, I just finally threw up my hands and said what the fuck and decided that I am going to lighten up.

The inspiration for happy faces in particular is my husband's ass. Or really, just him, being the type of person who would tattoo a happy face on his ass. He is beautiful :)

When my current vision is finished, there will be a rainbow where the blue making tape is on that window between the living room and the kitchen, and there will be blue sky with clouds on the shelf below it, and sky with clouds on another small section of ceiling on the other side of the living room.

Green Lion Eating the Sun

I am very very slowly making progress on my goal of painting something for each person in the community. Unknown whether or not I will ever finish. But I've taken a couple of projects I found most intriguing. A few projects if we count the butterflies I did on my own wall. Each of my paintings this past year has been very different, and very challenging in its own way.

I'm really fascinated by how different the painting looks in different lighting. I painted it in the lighting of the photo which I posted. A yellowish-orange torchiere floor lamp was lighting the room, late at night. I wonder how it would have looked different if I'd painted the painting during regular daylight, as it is photographed in the following picture. Flipping back and forth between the two of them on Picasa is trippy.

business card :)

devious, pillowz
When working on advertising for coaching, I bought flyer creating software, which for not much extra came with a couple of apps including a business card program. I've been enjoying my Printfolio Suite a lot.

Patri made a last minute decision to go to a conference in Texas in less than a week, and needed business cards. Given that we already had the logo from the website, I was able to whip this up in under fifteen minutes. I spent a good hour or so on experimenting with other versions and fighting with the buggy pdf conversion, but still, not bad. Its too late to order the prints online, so hopefully Kinkos will hook us up tomorrow.

Dr. Seuss Painting for [info]krchicken

Over a year ago, before we even had a building picked out for the new community, I decided that I wanted to do a little painting for each person around the front of their apartments. [info]krchicken asked for hers to be on a canvas, so its the one I started first. She asked for a Dr. Seuss building with some characters on it, and we browsed books and found a building she liked.

Over a year later, I have actually finished her painting! It was much more difficult than I would have expected to replicate a Dr. Seuss, so I'm quite proud of the finished product. I'm not sure if I will ever get around to paintings for everyone else or not, maybe some day, apparently I am capable of picking up projects well after I'd thought I'd given up on them.

Butterflies 2007

I've been gradually painting away at these over the past several months. Swallowtails are butterflies that I used to raise as caterpillars and release, Monarchs are just, Monarchs, beautiful, and I have a lovely memory of seeing the swarm of them up in Santa Cruz, and the Blue Morpho is a butterfly I saw once in Costa Rica which left a lasting impression.

Here are close-ups of the other two and a shot of all three of them on my wall:

wedding pillows, now in color!

We had white pillows for our wedding, since we were so pure *snicker*, but it seemed like cases were a good idea, so I decided to make some to match our pillow bin. Patri likes the colors because they're very googly ;) I finished almost all of them last weekend for my craft day project, and finished up those pesky last two this morning:

It All Glitters!

[index] Sunday, October 02, 2005 - It All Glitters!

I just finished up [info]chrysarose's web site:

http://allthatglittersfacepaint.com/

While pretty simple, it was still challenging and time consuming. I'd had a fair bit of practice making web pages with iPhoto from working on wedding pictures (which I'm still procrastinating posting ;), so that part went fast, but you know, that last ten percent... ;) A few interesting/difficult issues:Read more... )
